Edward Cartner


Edward Cartner was born and attended school in Northumberland. He trained as a teacher at Bede College, Durham University and then at Carnegie College Leeds. He left the teaching profession to join the Royal Air Force where he served for nearly 30 years. Writing has been a strong interest throughout his life - first published in the 'Children's Newspaper' in 1952 - and has contributed pieces to local newspapers and magazines. He has reviewed books for a maritime library for over 20 years and in retirement has published six books of military non-fiction and one of short stories. He lives in the West Country with his wife. They have two married daughters.

What do you love about Short Stories?

I enjoy reading and creating a plot that is complete yet concise.

Do you write in other forms?

I have written a memoir, a trilogy of anecdote and an anecdotal history.

What distracts you from writing?

In former times, career and family survival.

Outside of writing, what are your other passions?

Sailing.

What is your favourite book?

An old, long-forgotten favourite 'The Mary Deare'

Who are your favourite writers?

Evelyn Waugh, Anita Shreve and John le Carre

Where is your dream location?

Malta

What one item would you put into Room 101?

Political hubris

Never give up; keep plugging away.
