Tom Williams in 60 seconds
When did you start writing?2009 Chesterfield, United Kingdom
What do you love about Short Stories?Short stories are such a great form for experimentation, and for me, flexing and strengthening the muscles used for extended narratives, like a novel. In a short story everything comes thick and fast. It's intense, your space limited, your characters few. So the form forces you into a bottleneck, where the rest of the bottle can only be implied, hinted at, but the narrow space in which these characters live seems infinite.
Do you write in other forms?Poems, songs.
What distracts you from writing?Life.
Outside of writing, what are your other passions?Travel, adventure, drinking, guitar
What is your favourite book?'The Stand', by Stephen King.
Who are your favourite writers?Stephen King, Neil Gaiman and Cormac McCarthy
Where is your dream location?I have no idea.
What one item would you put into Room 101?Closed-minded people.
Do you have any advice for new writers?Read a lot, write a lot. Sometimes it will seem easy, other times the words won't come at all. But you have to keep pushing forward. Those feelings of despair, of frustration, as well as the feelings of achievement and elation, relief - use them. As one of my professors once said: 'the art that lasts, that endures, is art about feeling'.
