A countryman at heart, I live in a Listed 15th c house with my wife and two black labradors . It is in the most beautiful setting, a wildlife haven, on the upper reaches of the River Yealm in South Devon, and since retiring from business we have spent the last 5 years and too much money restoring it. I do believe whether it be houses, the countryside, our environment etc we are simply custodians passing through and should pass it on better than when we arrived. I feel very strongly about wildlife and marine conservation My life has been varied to say the least, tropical agriculture ,a spell as a volunteer in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) my early 20's as a tobacco farmer in Zambia, before becoming a farmer on Dartmoor. A disastrous marriage forced the sale of the farm and my pedigree cattle and a huge change in direction for the next 28 years in business until I retired in 2007. Living without the media that surrounds us today, no TV or internet with only the BBC World Service, and early tropical evenings is a great stimulus to read good books, which were always in short supply, and highly valued. Hemingway was a particular favourite, I can still remember reading The Old Man and the Sea in one sitting. I love the power of words and the ability for a writer to put you THERE. I know so many people who do not read books, and feel they are missing out so much. A spell in plaster for 3 months unable to walk and I started to write a thriller, it has sat on my computer since I became mobile. I have attended several writing courses, and written a number of short stories and prose. I found myself as a dinner guest sitting next to the remarkable Pru Leith, who told me about 'cutalongstory', so here I am, now all I need is the discipline to sit down and WRITE!
