D.D. Johnston

D.D. Johnston is a novelist and short story writer. He runs the http://onlinewritingtips.com website and teaches Creative Writing at the University of Gloucestershire. His first novel, Peace, Love, & Petrol Bombs (AK Press, 2011), featured in The Sunday Herald’s Books of the Year for 2011, has been recorded as an audio book for audible.com, and is published in Spanish as Paz, amor y cócteles molotov (Hoja de Lata, 2013; translated by Raquel Duato García). His experimental second novel, The Deconstruction of Professor Thrub (Barbican Press, 2013), made the judges’ longlist for the Goldsmith’s Prize and was a 2013 book of the year in The Morning Star. His third novel, The Secret Baby Room, will be published by Barbican Press in July 2015. I love short stories because whereas the best novels are often messy and unstructured, short stories suggest the possibility of perfection.

Radical politics and Heart of Midlothian Football Club (an unlikely combination)

My favourite short story is... This week it's Richard Yates's 'Liars in Love.'

Who are your favourite writers?

David Foster Wallace (it's a cliche now but I was a DFW fan before he died. He was the complete pack, Michel Houellebecq and Amy Hempel

The Isle of Skye

Find and use interesting nouns that are specifically relevant to your characters' place in the world.
