Daniel Touré

Daniel is a writer and creative writing practitioner working in the northwest. He has worked with a number of schools within the region and has led creative writing workshops at Manchester Art Gallery and Manchester Metropolitan University. Daniel has also twice co-judged the national competition for the Manchester Children’s Book Festival and regularly acts as a mentor to young writers involved in the Portico Prize for Young Writers. Daniel’s other projects have included community led work with refugees living in the northwest and the professional staging of his theatre play, We See Things Differently. The play debuted at the Dancehouse Theatre, home of the Northern Ballet School, and was commissioned by the Manchester Dyslexia Self Help Group. When did you start writing?

In junior school.

What do you love about Short Stories?

Their ability to transport the reader to another time, space, place or dimension in the matter of a few words.

Do you write in other forms?

I am currently writing a novel.

What distracts you from writing?

Emails, the internet, unexpected phone calls, house work, my two-year-old daughter.

Outside of writing, what are your other passions?

Music, photography and food.

What is your favourite book?

Alice in Wonderland, with Fingersmith by Sarah Waters coming a very close second.

Who are your favourite writers?

Gustave Flaubert , Oscar Wilde and Neil Gaiman.

Where is your dream location?

A beach front villa in Malta, or somewhere as equally sundrenched.

What one item would you put into Room 101?

Trifle, it’s simply gloop in a bowl.

Do you have any advice for new writers?

Read and write as much as you can. Also, try not to be too concerned about how you’ll be perceived as a writer. The imagination is limitless so write about what either interests or intrigues you.
