A young boy experiences something out of bounds which has more than one reason to be kept secret


It was a Friday, and began much like any other day after the monsoon, with a cool blue mist spreading out over the river in loose strands. But after school and the long journey back, the sun glanced off the river as if it was a mirror. He had eaten almost a third of the new loaf wrapped in a cloth on the car seat, unable to ignore its warm fragrance as he sat staring out of the window. He rewrapped it carefully, believing no-one would suspect him.

Friday was the day his parents spent in town. It always seemed a longer day than most, as they were rarely back before seven. Often he was already in bed when they returned and he was only dimly aware of his father's face pressed against the mosquito net, the tap of his mother's shoes as she crossed the marble floor.

The house felt empty, as it always did on a Friday. The rooms were cool and dark, the shutters fastened against the sun, though right angles of white light forced their way in at the corners...
