When did you start writing?

I don’t really remember. We lived in an old farmhouse with no central heating, so it would have had to be somewhere warm.

What do you love about short stories?

I think it’s the form - there’s a definite shape to them that’s very pleasing, like poetry. And then there’s the challenge of getting absolutely everything into such a small space.

Do you write in other forms?

I write poetry, biography and journalism. The last two are my bread and butter.

What distracts you from writing?

Almost everything! I have to be very disciplined.

Outside of writing, what are your other passions?

Travelling - I’m a passionate nomad. But I also love music, food and gardens.

What is your favourite book?

Stories? It would have to be either James Joyce’s The Dead, or Katherine Mansfield’s Daughters of the Late Colonel. Favourite books change - at the moment it’s Maggie O’Farrell’s The Hand that First Held Mine.

Who are your favourite writers?

Seamus Heaney, Barbara Kingsolver and Katherine Mansfield.

Where is your dream location?

Kaikoura, New Zealand. It has snow-covered mountains, the sea, and a wild coastline.

What one item would you put into Room 101?

Income tax returns!

Do you have any advice for new writers?

Stop procrastinating and just do it! You can always agonise over the editing later.
