Noel Williams

Noel Williams writes poetry, stories and non-fiction. His poetry collection, "Out of Breath", was published by Cinnamon Press in 2014. His poems have been published internationally, and he's won prizes in twenty competitions, with nominations both for the Forward Prize (UK) and Pushcart Prize (US). He's founding co-editor of Antiphon poetry magazine (, Associate Editor of Orbis International Literary Journal ( and reviews for magazines such as "The North".

He has collaborated in several exhibitions, including his own "Exploding Poetry" (2010) and "Skylines" (2014), as resident artist at Sheffield’s Bank Street Arts Centre and run community arts events and workshops. He’s proud to have read at the Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere, John Clare’s cottage and the Palace of Westminster. He is Professor of Communications at Sheffield Hallam University, and author or editor of fourteen books on writing, human communication and computing, the most popular being "How to get a 2:1 in Media, Communication and Cultural Studies" (Sage), for some reason.

He managed a 1st in English at King's College, Cambridge with only a minor nervous breakdown, and his PhD on William Blake, fairies and computational linguistics was carried out using a computer the size of a house at Sheffield University in the 1980s. He has an MA in Writing from his own university, which was by far the most enjoyable course he’s ever taken part in. Website:

What do you love about short stories?

They can be poetry, they can be fiction, they can be memoir, they can be fantasy, experiment, jokes or completely unconstrained.

Do you write in other forms?

Poetry, mainly, short stories, several unpublishable novels and some non-fiction.

What distracts you from writing?

Almost anything that comes along. Oh look! A squirrel!

Outside of writing, what are your other passions?

Music, art, badly played guitar, walking, history and military history

Kazuo Ishiguro, Kate Atkinson and John Keats

Where is your dream location?

The Lake District

What one item would you put into Room 101?

Intolerance. Also, a few carefully selected magazine editors

Do you have any advice for new writers?

Write every day. Read as widely as possible. Expect the first draft to feel wonderful and be dire.
