Matilda and One of the Twelve Dancing Princes

Fantasy Literary

by Chrissie Gittins

You may remember the King who had twelve daughters, each one apparently prettier than the next. Every night their shoes were danced to pieces. Every morning the servants found them in tatters. The King wanted to know what was going on. He offered the hand of one of his daughters to the first man who could discover where their nocturnal dancing took place. Failure to meant death. Many men tried to discover their secret but were duped by the princesses and lost their lives.

He told her he should like to find out where the princesses danced of an evening. She told him the secret, “Don’t drink the wine,” and gave him a velvet magenta cloak which could make him invisible.

He went to the palace to meet the King and his daughters. They treated him well enough. The princesses were positively delightful. He was shown the anteroom of their bedchamber and given a futon to sleep on. The princesses slept on twelve pine beds. At the foot of each bed was a pair of soft leather dancing shoes. The eldest princess brought him a glass of wine. She was especially nice. He imagined she felt sorry for him. She must have thought he was bound to die. He remembered just as he raised the glass to his mouth that he wasn’t supposed to drink the wine...
