When did you start writing?

My whole life has been conducted more in my head than anywhere else - many of those stories have found themselves on paper or on screen.

What do you love about short stories?

The best stories I've read play with the form in extraordinary ways. At the same time, it's those very limits which can make them immensely satisfying and complete.

Do you write in other forms?

There's that great moment when you know you've got the right format for your idea, whether short story, article, play or novel, and it comes to life. I've tried some of everything.

What distracts you from writing?

Rowing - I can't resist catching the high tide and getting out on the water.

Outside of writing, what are your other passions?

I'm always seeking out wilderness, I love swimming in the sea and I row with a Cornish flashboat team.

What is your favourite book?

Ferdinand by Munro Leaf.

Who are your favourite writers?

Carson McCullers, John McGahern and George Saunders.

Where is your dream location?

In a boat on the River Tiddy here in Cornwall.

What one item would you put into Room 101?

Misery memoirs.

Do you have any advice for new writers?

I'm still learning...
